Texts and the City: Chapter 4

Texts and the City

An accidental phone swap leads to a day of messages—and an unexpected connection.

When Devon and Ebonee bump into each other at a busy subway station, their phones get swapped, and they find themselves connected for the day. What starts as a frustrating inconvenience turns into a series of flirty, revealing texts—and the possibility of new love.

Are you flirting with me?

Ebonee pressed her lips together. She might have a slight shopping addiction, but she didn’t need a stranger—someone she had only met today, calling her out about it.

Ebonee gasped out loud and then looked around, but no one in any of the other cubicles was paying attention to her.

His “warning” had the opposite effect. Now she was curious about what she might find. Feeling mischievous, Ebonee flipped to his photo album and started scrolling through pictures.

“What’s good for the goose is good for the gander,” she murmured.

Most of his pictures were of the adorable puppy on his wallpaper, and she had a soft spot for men who loved animals. It often revealed their tender side and was kind of adorable, if she was being honest.

There was a photo of him and the dog at the dog park playing with other dogs, pictures of his pet sleeping, and a selfie of him holding the pup and a folded leash in one arm with the city in the background. In that photo, he wore a dark tank top that showed off his biceps, and there was a sheen of sweat on his face, as if he’d just come from a workout.

No, not the typical workout, she guessed. Not with the dog. Considering he mentioned walking, she wouldn’t be surprised if he belonged to a walking club.

Ebonee’s heart skipped a beat.

Was he messing with her? Sanaa Lathan? Really?

She pulled out her compact and checked her face. She didn’t look anything like the actress, except for her skin tone. That was it. Sanaa was gorgeous, in her opinion, and no one had ever told her she looked like Sanaa.

Until now.

That’s why I couldnt stop staring at you in the station.

Ebonee gnawed her lip. She slipped the compact back into her purse, unsure how to respond to Devon’s comment.

Ebonee grinned, shaking her head. Something told her he wasn’t really the blushing type, but she had to give credit where it was due. The man was handsome and clearly had a sense of humor. He was the kind of man she could kick back and relax with.

She continued scrolling through his photos, trying to gain additional insight into his personality when she stopped abruptly at a photo that left her mouth hanging open.

Movement on her computer caught Ebonee’s eye. A message popped up from her supervisor, asking her to pull some files. Groaning inwardly, she minimized the message.

As Ebonee tucked the phone into her purse, she couldn’t stop smiling. Her conversations with Devon hadn’t gone as she had expected. Texting him was enjoyable. He had brightened her dreary day.

How do you think things are going with these two?

  1. I was not expecting that discussion thread. It looks like Devon and Ebonee are flirting just fine. The chapter was super cool.

  2. I like the bander between the two. He is drawing her to him with his flirting. I am really enjoying this story.

  3. I like this. Getting to know each other after a cute meet, but don’t have to be fake. Small revelations and a little flirting.

  4. Things are definitely heating up. What’s with the third appendage? Are you throwing a bit of eroticism in the game Delaney? I want to see what happens when they finally meet to swap phones.

  5. See this is why I did not want to start this story! 😂😂😂
I am now on pins and needles waiting for the next installment!
