Texts and the City: Chapter 5

Texts and the City

An accidental phone swap leads to a day of messages—and an unexpected connection.

When Devon and Ebonee bump into each other at a busy subway station, their phones get swapped, and they find themselves connected for the day. What starts as a frustrating inconvenience turns into a series of flirty, revealing texts—and the possibility of new love.

The after work meetup is confirmed

The lunch meeting was over, and Devon was back in his office, seated at the drafting table and working on his latest project. Ebonee’s phone, off to the side on the table, vibrated as a text came through.

He checked the message. This was the second one of the day. He had told himself to wait until she reached out again, but he had never been known for his patience. Besides, it was probably important. It was from her mother.

Poor Derek.

Wonder what the poor loser did to get that type of reaction, Devon mused.

Devon chuckled softly to himself. Ebonee then informed him about other texts that had come through since the morning, but none of them were important, so he told her she didn’t have to respond. He would take care of them later when he got his phone back.

“Devon?”

He straightened in his chair. “Yes, Carlos.”

The senior partner stood across the room, just inside the doorway. “You wanted to leave early tonight?”

“I wanted to leave on time,” Devon gently corrected. “I’ll be leaving at five but wanted to make sure you didn’t need me for anything.”

The expectation was that everyone stayed a little late, even if it was only thirty minutes. Most days he didn’t mind. Staying late looked good to the higher-ups, and later in the day the train was less crowded, but he couldn’t stay late tonight if he was going to meet Ebonee.

“Shouldn’t be a problem. I’ll be leaving early myself. The in-laws are in town, and we have to keep them entertained.” Carlos sounded defeated, as if entertaining his in-laws was the last thing he wanted to do. “I’ll see you on Monday.”

“Thanks.”

Devon waited until he had disappeared out the door before he tapped out a message to Ebonee.

Chapter 6 is the last chapter, and our couple is about to meet up again. Do you think it’ll go smoothly or will it be awkward?

  1. I think it will go smoothly, it’s what happens after they switch their phones and go their separate ways! That’s worth waiting for.😃😃

  2. It might be a little awkward. Each waiting for the other to say or do something to keep the connection once the exchange phones. Not wanting to be the first, in case the other doesn’t feel the same.

  3. Well, we’ll see on Friday. I hoping it goes smoothly and that they can enjoy each other in person.

  4. I think it will be two friends getting together. I am late reading this chapter, so let me go find out. LOL!
